On This Episode of Jewish Gilt:
Open House. Jonathan and the director of his gallery, Abe Kugielsky, hold an open house to appraise and evaluate antique Judaica from whoever comes through the door. Items include a hand-chased silver Seder plate, a set of 180 year-old holiday prayer books from England, and an extremely rare and valuable Kiddush cup crafted from… a coconut?
The amazing story of a smuggled box from the founding of the Jewish State. Tova Eizik fought for Israel’s independence in the 1940’s, spent a year in a Syrian prison, and has a special locket to commemorate the experience. Jonathan visits her home in Monsey, NY, to check out a unique hand-crafted, olive wood jewelry box created by a student of Jerusalem’s Bezalel School.
An unusual collection of Jewish Burial Society memorabilia. Isaac Pollak collects Chevra Kadisha [Jewish burial society] artifacts, and gives Jonathan an exclusive and detailed look at some of his finest pieces at his home on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. His collection includes everything from elaborate memorial candles, washing cups, combs, and even dirt from Israel imported for the sake of burying with the Jewish dead.
See the gavel fall during an auction of antique Judaica. Jonathan presides over one of J. Greenstein and Co.’s twice-a-year auctions at the Martinique Hotel in Midtown Manhattan. It features the Judaica of an elderly collector who has been acquiring treasures for over 40 years.
